2015 Southern Cross Stakes May Figure for Sarajevo

January 14th, 2015

Unlucky not to secure a place over three competitive starts through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, trainer John O’Shea has been thrilled with the form and class displayed by talented three-year-old Sarajevo since his return to work in December.

Claiming one win over his short four start career so far, Sarajevo was last seen at the races finishing a credible sixth amongst particularly classy company in the featured Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) on September 13th.

Revealing his is yet to settle on a specific racing path for the Lonhro colt through the 2015 Autumn Racing Carnival, O’Shea said Sarajevo’s campaign will remain a race-to-race prospect, with an appearance in a race like the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 14th a realistic prospect should early results dictate its legitimacy.

“We will be taking it race-by-race this time in,” O’Shea told Racenet.

“I think seven furlongs is as far as he wants, so I will be trying to keep him to sprint races against his own age, at least early into this campaign.

“He did everything right winning his first trial this time in.

“We have him forward enough to get him racing by the end of this month but we’ll know more after the trial.”

Running third in a Rosehill barrier trial before beating several notable competitors home in a Warwick Farm hit-out prior to his competitive debut in early 2014, Sarajevo contested only one start under form Godolphin trainer Peter Snowden; an impressive one-and-a-half length victory in the Mossman @ Vinery Handicap (1100m) on April 21st before immediately returning to the spelling paddock.

Placing fourth in the Listed Rosebud (1200m) upon returning to racing on August 9th, the colt out of Laleta was again lucky to finish just outside the places when blocked for a run late in the Group 3 Run To The Rose (1200m) in his only other start prior to the Golden Rose Stakes.
