Aussies Love Sport to Take Benefit from 2016 Southern Cross Stakes

February 10th, 2016

Trainer Peter Robl has been pleased with the benefit Aussies Love Sport has taken from his first two runs this time but concedes the classy field confirmed for Saturday’s 2016 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick may be too good for the five-year-old to overcome.

Aussies Love Sport has posted a commendable four wins and five minors through nineteen career starts since debuting to racing for Gai Waterhouse in 2012; passing through the stables of David Vandyke, John Sargent and Toby Edmunds before arriving in Robl’s care at the conclusion of his 2015 campaign.

Resuming this time for eleventh in the Listed Goldmarket Quality (1300m) on Boxing Day, the Redoute’s Choice gelding failed to handle the late pace when tenth in the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) on the Gold Coast on January 9th.

Robl is confident Aussies Love Sport has improved drastically since his most recent appearance but concedes the likes of Tiger Tees, Generalife and Big Money will probably be too good for his runner in the 2016 Southern Cross Stakes.

“I just wasn’t happy with him up at the Gold Coast,” Robl said.

“I’m not sure if he handled the humidity because he just didn’t settle in well.

“He raced ok, but probably a little bit below his best.

“He seems to have done well back at home and he has found a nice race there on Saturday.

“There are a couple in it like Vashka or Rich Enuff that are probably going to be too sharp for him over 1200, but we are just going there looking for him to run a nice race.

“He will more than likely go either the Liverpool City Cup or the National Sprint at Canberra.”

Aussies Love Sport stamped himself as one to watch through a strong three-year-old campaign in 2013; highlighted by success in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) and credible third in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m).

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2016 Southern Cross Stakes odds, for which Aussies Love Sport can be taken at a quote of $13 for success or $3.60 to finish in the first three.
